Too Wet Too Room

The idea of a wet room has always appealed to me, the unobtrusive nature and the clean lines making it an ideal choice. The apparent benefit of only needing a small amount of space without feeling claustrophobic. I have been hesitant to install one as a result of perceived cost, the required specialist installation and possible maintenance costs if things go wrong. So during my recent investigations into shower room solutions I was pleased to discover what I would classify as the pseudo wet room – well shower anyway.

It’s actually not a wet room at all since it requires a tray and a screen or two depending on your preference and positioning of the shower tray. I have positioned my tray within the recess of my bathroom, with three tilled walls surrounding it. The dimensions are 1400mm long by 700mm deep. Although I would have liked a slightly deeper tray I think the additional length of the tray compensates – (additionally I didn’t have any more space to play with!)

My choice of screen came down to personal preference and practicality. I wanted enough screen cover to protect the rest of the bathroom but not too much so as to make getting in and out of the shower a tight squeeze! In the end I opted for an 800mm screen, leaving a gap of 600mm to get in and out of the shower.

Why a reference to pseudo wet room you ask…well it might be a little tenuous but it’s because the screen has no frame and as such feels much less imposing then a traditional shower enclosure. It creates the feeling of space and dare I say it a more modern finish. The only subsequent dilemma I then faced was due to the transparency – I obviously needed shower attachments and taps that would do the installation justice.

I want to maintain a modern and sleek feel but also have the peace of mind of controlled and constant temperatures. I’m considering the Abode AB2216 Concealed Thermostatic Shower Mixer in Chrome. This will enable me to hide the pipe work from view, creating the clean finish I crave but additionally provide the safety of been thermostatically controlled. I like the dual lever control, the easy to use operating functionality and the modern squared design. I could combine this with the Abode AB2312 Shower Head in Chrome. This compliments the tap design and provides good flow rate and water cover through the head as it is sized 200mm by 200mm.

I envisage that I will be spending a considerable amount of time in my new shower!
