It’s officially UK Coffee Week so to perk up spirits in the office we’ve been indulging in an Affagato or two made in the fabulous Whirlpool ACE102IXL coffee machine. Working in the appliance industry means we’re lucky enough to have our very own top of the range coffee machine in our office, a gadget we wouldn’t be without. The team at Appliance House enjoy a coffee or two to see us through the day but we don’t do instant here, we serve freshly ground coffee everyday!
If you’re hoping to invest in a built in coffee machine in your kitchen then our review of the Whirlpool ACE102/IXL is definitely worth a read. We have even shared our lovely Affagato recipe below, give it a try, it’s so easy and really tasty too.
Whirlpool ACE102/IXL Integrated Coffee Machine Review;
The Whirlpool ACE 102/IXL is a stylish integrated coffee machine offering bean to cup coffee, allowing you to enjoy barista style coffee from the comfort of your home, or in our case, the office!
The external appearance of the Whirlpool ACE102IXL is sleek and minimal thanks to the LCD touch control panel and stainless steel surround. The stainless steel has a special iXelium coating which is twice as easy to clean when compared to standard stainless steel. The Nanotechnology coating on the stainless steel makes it more resistant to yellowing and scratching helping to keep the appliance looking like new for many years to come. The machine we use at Appliance House has been installed for over two years and gets used constantly yet it still looks immaculate and remains scratch free, it couldn’t be easier to keep clean which in our eyes is a big plus point! The intuitive touch control panel allows you to choose between many coffee options such as espressos, lattes and cappuccinos. From here you can also adjust the strength, temperature and volume according to your taste, you even have the facility to prepare two cups of coffee at the same time. It’s rare that the team at Appliance House opt for the same style coffee, switching between functions is fast and easy which is ideal when you’ve drawn the short straw to make the coffee’s yet still have a mountain of work to get through!
This modern coffee machine has been designed with the user in mind. A large 1.8L water tank and drip tray can be removed from the front of the machine with minimal effort. A small, removable compartment built into the internals of the machine captures the ground coffee waste below, from here it can be emptied and cleaned with ease. The brewing unit should be cleaned regularly to ensure it continues to grind coffee beautifully, with this in mind, Whirlpool have ensured the brewing unit is extremely easy to remove and secure back into place.
To keep the machine fully stocked with coffee you simply pull the front of the machine out to reveal a number of fresh coffee, storage compartments. Here you will find a large tray for storing bags of coffee which means all your coffee supplies can be housed neatly within the machine itself. There are two further hinged and lidded compartments; a large section for coffee beans (As shown open on the image below) and a smaller, central compartment for adding freshly ground coffee. Whirlpool have provided a measuring scoop which is neatly stored inside the smaller unit. Just one scoop of fresh ground coffee is the maximum required for the machine, by using the scoop provided you can always rest assured you have just the right amount of coffee for the machine.
You may be wondering why there is any need to use ground coffee when the machine grinds beans so perfectly. The inclusion of compartments for both a ground and bean option is fantastic as it allows you to prepare de-caffeinated coffee alongside caffeinated coffee should you need it, great for when you’re hosting an evening dinner party and some guests prefer a cup of decaf to finish the night. You can switch between ground and bean option with the touch of a button.
The hot water spout ensures you have hot water available when you need it without having to boil the kettle. This convenient feature is perfect for making tea or instant meals like soup and noodles too. The hot water nozzle is height adjustable so with a simple pull or push it will accommodate a large range of cup heights. The Whirlpool ACE102IXL has a large, plastic milk container with a milk steam frothing nozzle. The frothing nozzle creates lovely milk based drinks such as creamy hot chocolate or delicious frothy coffee at the flick of a button. A switch in the lid of the milk container gives you the option of choosing between cappuccino or latte, for a milkier coffee.
The Whirlpool ACE102/IXL really is a fantastic built in coffee machine that is so easy to use and maintain. If you’re serious about good coffee then this machine is worth the investment.
Now, back to Affogatos! We promised to share The Appliance House Affogato Coffee and here it is. Our caffeinated, super sweet treat of the week;
An Affagato is an Italian coffee-based dessert. Simply a scoop of vanilla ice cream drowned with a shot of hot espresso. It is also delicious served with a liqueur shot like amaretto or cognac for an extra special after dinner treat.
- 1 scoop of ice cream – we used vanilla but chocolate or salted caramel work well too
- 1 shot of freshly brewed espresso
- 1 shot of amaretto (mixed with coffee before pouring over the ice cream) – Optional. We refrained during work hours!!
- Chocolate shavings or crushed roasted nuts – optional
- Add a scoop of ice cream to a small chilled glass or cup.
- Pour over the coffee shot.
- Top with chocolate shavings/nuts & serve alongside biscotti.
Simple but delicious!
What is UK Coffee Week?
UK Coffee Week is a nationwide celebration of coffee. A number of coffee establishments get involved by helping to raise funds for the communities that grow our coffee, this could be a 5p donation for every coffee purchased in their cafe or coffee making classes with proceeds raised donated to the cause.
We love a coffee or two and thank the communities who harvest the coffee we drink so we are helping to raise funds towards this worthy cause too. For every built in coffee machine purchased during UK coffee week (16th April – 22nd April 2018) Appliance House will donate £50 towards Project Waterfall.
Project Waterfall is an initiative dedicated to bringing clean water facilities to coffee growing communities in the rural Jabi Tehnan district of Ethiopia. Clean water improves the health and well being of these communities, with the ultimate aim to reduce poverty, create a better education and improve the lives of families living in these deprived areas.
