Make a splash – update your kitchen!

Given our present financial climate, it seems many people are choosing to ‘improve’ rather than make a move to a new home. There are hundreds of ideas on how to make changes to your existing rooms and furnishes in order to replenish and transform them into something with a more contemporary and en vogue feel.best-idea-white-kitchen

The focus in this article is on kitchen units and accessories. Many of us have a fitted kitchen which may have been installed a number of years ago, has nothing wrong with it, is still fully functional and not even looking tired; it just needs updating a little to fit in with today’s tastes and palates.

So what can you do if you have little to spend and a completely acceptable kitchen in situ? Have you been looking at house and home style magazines lately, or been to a kitchen showroom? If you have then you will have noticed that many showrooms are now displaying kitchens using two or three different colour ways. White gloss kitchens are teamed with high gloss burgundy or red ‘feature’ style cupboards. Wooden kitchens have stainless steel kitchen islands or butchers blocks and country kitchens have added splashes of colour using contemporary tiles, ranges and work surfaces.

We suggest you have a look at your kitchen as it stands. Is there a small bank of wall units or drawers you could replace and add some new but different coloured units too? Better still, is your kitchen still in production and do the suppliers now provide it in different colours; if so, you can simply change your doors without even having to bother with the units.

If replacing cupboards is not an option, then do you have space for a kitchen island? This doesn’t have to match (it’s probably better that it doesn’t) or cost the earth. Your standard high street stores often offer stand alone kitchen furniture.

If you don’t have extra room, and don’t want to replace a couple of your kitchen cupboards, then you could add a splash of colour using appliances instead. Gorenjes fantastic retro collection of fridge freezers are very appealing and come in a variety of sizes and colours, or you could spend less and add colour using new splash backs available these days in stainless steel, glass or plastic available in more or less every colour of the spectrum.

Finally, cookers, hobs, hoods, microwaves, toasters and kettles are also now available in every colour you could imagine, and if any of this still doesn’t tie in with your purse strings, you could always opt for a splash of paint. Try using limes, splashes of cerise or purple to add drama to your room.
