Easy Peel Oven Roasted Chestnut Recipe;Easy Peel Roasted Chestnuts

Preparation time: 5 minutes | Cooking time: 15/20 minutes + 15 minutes steaming | Serves; 4

Ingredients;

400g Fresh Chestnuts in Shells.

Method;

  1. Preheat oven to 220℃.
  2. Using a serrated knife very carefully slice the upper side of each chestnut shell, make sure you score all the way through the outer shell.
  3. Place the chestnuts in a pan and cover with cold water. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Once simmering remove from the heat and drain well. Transfer to a baking tray and place score side up.
  5. Pop in the oven to roast for 10-15 minutes or until the shells begin to open to expose the chestnut.
  6. Remove from the oven, pour into a bowl and immediately cover with a clean tea-towel for 10-15 minutes. During this time the steam will help to loosen the shells and skin around the chestnut.
  7. Whilst still warm, open the shells and peel away any brown skin around the chestnut. Keep the unpeeled chestnuts warm whilst you peel, it will make the task of peeling much easier!
  8. Enjoy, preferably whilst warm.

Authors Tips;

Chestnuts are much easier to peel whilst warm so try to peel after straight after the steaming process, if they’re cold you’ll really struggle as the skin will begin to harden around the nut!

As perishable items, chestnuts should be stored in the refrigerator. If you plan to use them at a later date then place them in an airtight freezer bag and freeze them on the day of purchase. Chestnuts left at room temperature will spoil quickly.

If saving for later, place the peeled, roasted chestnuts in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
