What is Black Friday and when did it become so popular?

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year. It is a day where shoppers can grab a bargain in the run up to Christmas as many large stores and online retailers promote one off sales and discounts on their products during this day. The following Monday is known as Cyber Monday, another busy day of shopping with mega discounts to be found.

Since 1952, the day after Thanksgiving in America has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S. Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November and on the Friday many of the major retailers extend their opening hours and offer promotional sales, this day is now known as Black Friday.

It was only a matter of time before marketing gurus in the UK began to introduce Black Friday to our shopping calendars. Back in 2013 Black Friday really started to become hugely popular in the UK. During Black Friday last year a total of £1.23bn was spent on online retail sites, marking a +12.2% increase on the £1.1bn spent on the same day in 2015.
